NOAA Weather Radio Programming Instructions

S.A.M.E. stands for Specific Area Message Encoding and it allows you to program your radio with your county (and surrounding counties if desired) so you only get alerts that are in your local area.

This technology eliminates all other alerts for areas unrelated to your selected location(s). Weather and other emergencies can occur at any time, day or night. Without SAME, it is possible that you could be alerted unnecessarily at any hour for an emergency as far as 100 miles away.

To get S.A.M.E. county code information for your area, visit the NOAA website for County by County coverage information or you may call the National Weather Service toll free number: 1.888.697.7263 (1.888.NWS.SAME).
