Women Veterans Day is celebrated annually on June 12th to honor the service and sacrifices of women in the U.S. Military.
The History and Meaning
- The Anniversary: June 12th marks the historic signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 by President Harry S. Truman.
- Permanent Status: This groundbreaking legislation officially allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the United States Armed Forces.
- Not a Replacement: It is not intended to be a separate Veterans Day, but rather a specific commemoration to recognize the unique roles, history and challenges faced by female service members.
Observance and Celebrations
- State Recognition: While it is not an official federal holiday, it is widely recognized by individual states through official gubernatorial proclamations and legislative acts.
- Commemorative Events: Many organizations host localized celebrations and ceremonies. A prominent event typically takes place at the Military Women's Memorial at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, which serves as a national hub for honoring America's military women.
Veterans Resources: The day is also used by the Department of Veterans Affairs to highlight specialized health equity, advocacy and Women Veterans Health Care programs designed to support female veterans.
