Fairfield County Welcomes New Detention Center Director

On Monday, May 4, Fairfield County officially welcomed Alvin Graber as the new Director of the Fairfield County Detention Center. Director Graber brings with him 28 years of experience with the South Carolina Department of Corrections and a strong commitment to leadership, professionalism and officer development.

Director Graber began his career in 1995 as a Corrections Officer with Kirkland Re-Entry and Release, a specialized unit within Kirkland Correctional Institution. Throughout his distinguished career, he advanced through numerous leadership roles, including Member of the Special Operations Response Team, Inmate Grievance Coordinator, Dorm Lieutenant, Captain at Watkins Pre-Release and Major at Manning Re-Entry and Work Release Center. Most recently, he served for ten years as Associate Warden at Goodman Correctional Institution.

“When I learned that some of the Detention Center Officers in Fairfield County had not received the proper training and certifications needed for their positions, I wanted to use my knowledge and experience to help lead this organization,” said Director Graber. “I want to help our officers advance in their careers while ensuring the safety of both staff and inmates.”

Director Graber also shared his appreciation for the warm welcome he has received from the Fairfield County community. “I’ve met a lot of friendly people, and everyone has been incredibly welcoming. I’ve truly been welcomed with open arms. It’s the people that make Fairfield County special.”

Since stepping into his new role, Director Graber has already begun working to ensure all detention center officers receive the training and certifications necessary to meet a high standard of excellence. “I’ve already reached out to the Criminal Justice Academy regarding training requirements and the process needed to complete certifications,” he stated.

Known for his hands-on leadership style, Director Graber added, “I like to see and know everything that is going on in the facility.”

“Fairfield County is fortunate to have a man with the experience, knowledge, and reputation of Director Graber join our team,” said Fairfield County Administrator Vic Carpenter. “His accomplishments and leadership demonstrate not only what needs to be done, but how to do it in a way that makes our citizens and county proud.”

As part of Correctional Officers Week, Director Graber hosted a Thank You Cookout for the staff of the Fairfield County Detention Center on Friday, May 8.

Fairfield County is excited to welcome Director Graber to the Fairfield County family and looks forward to his leadership as he guides and supports the dedicated officers of the Fairfield County Detention Center.
