Fairfield County Announces Emergency Preparations and Facility Closures Ahead of Winter Storm Fern

Fairfield County Emergency Management, in coordination with local first responder agencies, continues to prepare for the anticipated impacts of Winter Storm Fern.
 
Warming Shelter
In cooperation with the Fairfield County School District, a warming shelter will be established at the Fairfield Central High School Gymnasium, located at 836 U.S. Highway 321 By-Pass South, Winnsboro, SC 29180, beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026.
Citizens utilizing the shelter are encouraged to bring personal bedding or cots, food, water, medications and any other supplies needed for the duration of their stay. Individuals should park in the staff parking lot immediately to the left of the facility, as requested by Fairfield Central High School.
 
Recycling Centers
All Fairfield County Recycling Centers will close at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, and will remain closed through Sunday, January 25, 2026. The County will announce reopening times once conditions are deemed safe.
 
Parks and Recreation Facilities
All Fairfield County Parks and Recreation facilities will close at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, and will remain closed through Sunday, January 25, 2026. Reopening announcements will be made following the mitigation of all safety hazards.
 
Emergency Operations Center
The Fairfield County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be activated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Citizens may report fallen trees, downed power lines and roadway debris by calling 803-815-4038. All life-threatening emergencies should be reported by dialing 911.
 
Public Updates
The Fairfield County Emergency Response Team will continue to provide updates regarding weather conditions, response efforts and hazardous areas to avoid through the Fairfield County South Carolina and Fairfield County Emergency Management Facebook pages.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, monitor official communications and take appropriate precautions as weather conditions evolve.
