ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following duties are considered normal for this position.  Activities listed here are not to be construed as either exclusive or all-inclusive; other duties may be assigned or required.

Performs fire suppression tasks or other related activities as required to accomplish incident stabilization objectives established by the Incident Commander.

Performs search and rescue tasks, as required to accomplish life safety objectives established by the Incident Commander.

Performs salvage and overhaul tasks, as required to accomplish property conservation objectives established by the Incident Commander.

Operates fire department vehicles.

Operates and maintains firefighting hand tools and power equipment.

Selects and wears personal protective equipment appropriate to the emergency response.

Responds to dispatched alarms and other calls for emergency assistance.

Inspects and restores personal protective equipment, fire apparatus, facilities, and equipment upon the conclusion of each emergency response in order to ensure readiness for use during any subsequent emergency event.

Promotes community fire prevention, instructs the public and schools on fire and life safety topics.

Attends drills, training courses, external fire service-related courses as approved by the department.

Performs any related work as required by shift personnel.

Gives tours of assigned fire station, demonstrates fire equipment and apparatus and participates in other education programs for various groups and general public.

Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as street name changes, MSDS sheet, gas logs, monthly fire reports, etc.

Prepares and/or processes training reports, incident reports, vehicle maintenance reports, inspection reports, memos, correspondence, etc.

Operates all trucks and equipment and utilizes all fire suppression equipment, hand tools, air compressor, generators, fans, self-contained breathing apparatus, and various office machines including a calculator, computer, two-way radio, etc. 

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Deputy Director, other County personnel, volunteers, other fire departments, community groups, civic and professional organizations, school groups, other emergency response agencies, law enforcement agencies, the general public.

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS

It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.                                                                                              

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Tests fire hoses and hydrants.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by training in fire service programs, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must complete required coursework and maintain required certifications as issued by the S.C. Fire Academy; must possess certifications in CPR and First Aid.   Must possess a valid state Class E driver's license.

Required certifications: NFPA Firefighter I; Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT); Pump Operations I; Basic Auto Extrication; NIMS 700, 800, 100, and 200; Emergency Medical First Responder (EMR), positive pressure ventilation. 

**Position works approximately 24 hours/week
