ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Enforces the animal control laws and ordinances established by state and local authorities.

Responds to complaints concerning uncontrolled and vicious animals as well as animal abuse cases.

Patrols County streets and picks up and confines animals that are strayed and unwanted.

Operates the County animal shelter according to laws and regulations; ensures that animals are properly fed and cared for on a daily basis, even on weekends and holidays. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment in the shelter; orders Items as needed.

Interviews complainants, animal owners and others to obtain information used in making responsible decisions concerning the welfare of animals.

Conducts neighborhood surveillance checks.  Sets traps as needed.

Conducts euthanasia procedures as appropriate to control the animal population in the County.

Handles adoption procedures for animals in the shelter.

Receives fees as appropriate and maintains records of same.

Maintains records of complaints, daily activities, vehicle mileage and fuel, statistical records, etc.

Prepares and submits to proper authority reports related to the activities of the animal control division.

Assists the health department in investigating bites to ensure rabies control.

Operates, cares for and maintains equipment and machines used to carry out the functions of animal control including the euthanasia chamber, catch pole, traps, medication, etc.

Provides advice and assistance to the public, dog owners, humane groups and others related to the control of animals in the county.

Regular and sustained attendance required. 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma and one to two years of experience in animal control, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Must possess a valid S.C. driver’s license. Must have a clear criminal history and be able to pass Level 3 Certification at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Weekend work required.
